What have I been doing for 14 years?

Always a moms payday to be with your kids as they venture out into the world exploring and experiencing new things.

Tonight was one of those paydays when Bud asked me if I could replace his shoelaces in his school shoes for him.

 this was my reply:

Hell no, son... you can do that shizz on your own!

Bud: But I don't know how?

GASP! WHAT THE...?!?

I think I heard the earth shake which leads me to ask this...

Where have I gone wrong that my 14 year old does not know how to change his own shoelaces?

I am not an enabler.  I expect my kids to do things for themselves mostly because I want them not to turn out like their dad :)<---bless his heart... His mom totally coddled him and the amount of suffering I have endured due to her poor parenting is epic.  In fact, this blog would be nothing without her parenting fails now that I think about it.

So in the end Duke and I sat back and watched him change his shoelaces, determined to somehow change genetics.... It took hours.  First to get the frayed laces out and then to add the new ones in.

What else have I missed teaching him in these 14 years?

22 crazy comments. I'm still waiting for yours!:

Ahh changing shoelaces.. something you never think of when you think about parenting.

Haha. This made me laugh because Buddy pulled out his flat cardboard shoes with laces and asked me to help him the other day. I'm not kidding when I say that it took me 3 tries to get the shoes laced the right way.

LOL Maybe he just outgrew all his shoes before the laces needed replaced before?

Thanks for the 'heads up' I think I'll go teach my 6 yr. old right now how to tie his shoes.....damn he has velcro. I guess he'll get a tie pair for christmas?!

That is so funny! Thanks for the laugh :) I just bought shoes for one of my kids the other night and the laces were a mess. I actually wondered where the clerk who obviously didn't know how to lace shoes might have been raised.

...and WHERE is the video of this?! Sheesh....I have the popcorn ready....

Have you seen the shoes lately? They are all laced in some convoluted pattern instead of the normal criss cross. Like Daffy said, where's the video? I think I need to learn how to lace these new-fangled things too.

Hey, if he's 14 and can wipe his own ass, then you've totally done your job!

Poor Bud. Next time he can call me. I'll change his laces for him. And then bake him some cookies and read him a nigh-nigh story

I have a 13 year old like that. We've locked him in his room and open it a crack to push his food tray in. We figure society is safer this way, and it's much easier than having to actually teach him stuff.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but when I was SEVENTEEN my friend's dad had to lace my shoes. I'm pretty sure his reaction was the same as yours! But i love having yet another thing to blame on my mother!

hahahahahahaha @ Marie! At least you know Bud won't go around leaving comments on people's blogs like that. And at least your son didn't crank the car up for you and leave the garage door closed.....

That is so funny, I am sure that is the only thing you missed teaching your son in the last 14 years:)

We are going to have to make sure that your boy and my girl do not meet and get married. They would give birth to some seriously blonde kids. Even though mine is half black. Blonde I tell ya!

Don't feel too bad...my 12 year old would rather me buy him slipon shoes because he's too LAZY to tie them!

Wow, you get a lot of spam in your comment section...
What was I going to say? Oh yes, shoelaces... I think there is something to be said about slip on's.

Ha; I am most definitely 100 percent with you, both in trying not to be an enabler and in enduring the effects of a coddled husband.

My son and his friend (they're 8 and 9) both realized their shoelaces were untied the other day when the moms were right there. His friend held out his foot to his mom! My son tried the same thing, until I gave him the "look." He struggled through tying his own shoe. The horror.
